A Closer Look at the WEN Hair Loss Scandal

WEN cleansing conditioner

WEN hair products have been taking over the world of cosmetic news, as a number of women report severe hair loss or baldness after using these products.

According to Chicago’s WGNTV, a WEN class action lawsuit was recently filed against the company and may have spurred thousands of other effected customers to do the same. WEN is a line celebrity hair care products, which are advertised to be safer for hair than traditional shampoo.

Hoewever, these products have been reportedly causing bald spots and have been leaving devastation amongst its users. WGN looked over the pivotal WEN class action lawsuit, which alleges that the WEN products had caused her severe hair loss and criticizes the lack of regulation in the hair products industry.

Overview of WEN Hair Loss Allegations

According to the WEN class action lawsuit, plaintiff Shelly B. spent $32.98 on a bottle of WEN’s Cleansing Conditioner a little less than a year ago and was the most she ever spent on a hair product. Not long after she used the product, the hair loss started, she and many others filed complaints to WEN to no avail, accodging to WGN’s report.

“It was like my hands were full with my hair and I was like what is going on with this,” Shelly said.

Shelly’s initiative inspired numerous women to take action, as 200 women have reportedly joined the class action suit. According to WGN’s investigation, there have been approximately 17,000 complaints submitted to WEN parent company Guthy Renker.

The FDA had also received those complaints and sent Guthy Renker a letter, but not much else has been done, reported WGN. Currently, there is no legal requirement for a company to notify the FDA that it received such complaints.

According to WGN, the FDA has not updated its policies regarding personal care products since 1938 and that these products require no regulation unless they contain drugs or make medical claims. All the FDA can ask the company for is a voluntary recall but without scientific evidence proving definitive cause.

Tina Sigurdson of the Environmental Working Group from DC, an advocacy group, has also been observing the case. Sigurdson stated that the company is not revealing what may be causing the hair loss, despite several safety tests conducted.

Court documents indicate that WEN had conducted 13 safety tests, but only revealed the results of four of them. WEN is under no legal obligation to reveal the results of the other studies to the FDA, and currently insist that their hair care products are perfectly safe to use.

“There is no scientific evidence whatsoever to support any claim that our hair care products caused anyone to lose their hair. There are many reasons why individuals may lose their hair, all unrelated to wen hair care products. We will vigorously contest the allegations made against our products,” Joe Hixson of WEN stated.

However, Dr. Omeed Memar, dermatologist and hair loss expert, has analyzed the ingredients list of the products and is concerned over the long list of chemicals. Dr. Memar suggests that these cases could be the result of allergic reactions, which is why all ingredients should be listed and not be categorized in ways such as “fragrance chemical.”

Overall, no one is sure of what is causing the hair loss, but consumer outcry is increasing in volume regardless. Currently WEN is in mediation with members of the class actions suit, and is trying to reach a settlement.
