DePuy Metal Hip Implant Led to Complications, Lawsuit Says

DePuy hip implant lawsuit

DePuy Orthopedics was hit with a metal hip implant lawsuit from a Pennsylvania woman who claimed the device failed and caused multiple complications.

The hip implant lawsuit further alleges that DePuy failed to warn her about metal-on-metal hip replacement problems, including hip replacement infections.

Plaintiff Joan E. had the DePuy ASR hip implant surgically placed into her right hip on March 01, 2008, to replace the bones in that pelvic region. According to the claim, it was not long after the hip implant was implanted that Joan started experiencing major metal-on-metal hip replacement problems.

Following the implantation of her ASR hip implant, Joan suffered a variety of personal and economic damage allegedly due to the design defects of DePuy’s hip implant. These metal-on-metal hip replacement problems include: tissue inflammation, severe pain, mechanical complications, and other symptoms associated with hip replacement infection.

Hip replacement infection can cause a number of problems for patients, as bacterial cells attack healthy tissue in the surgical areas. This can also lead to the formation of pseudotumors, corrosion, and nerve damage. Joan suffered all these complications and more, as her lawsuit stated she also developed metallosis.

Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Problems

Metallosis is a  condition that occurs when the blood becomes poisoned, due to the metal ions being shed into the body from the metal hip implant. When the ball-and-socket joints of the metal hip implant interact under friction, the ions are released into the bloodstream.

Metallosis has become a commonly reported problem in metal hip implant lawsuits, and often leads to the need for hip replacement revision. This is a serious problem commonly reported with metal-on-metal hip implants, which were originally thought to be superior to plastic or ceramic models.

By the time Joan had undergone revision surgery for her metal hip implant, she was in severe pain and had been unable to work, she claimed. Her hip replacement revision surgery was on Sept. 29, 2015, where the ASR hip implant was explanted.

The lawsuit indicates that Joan became aware of the side effects associated with metal hip implants sometime after the device was removed, which spurred her into filing legal action. Joan claims that she never would have used the ASR hip implant if she had known of the complications, and that DePuy failed in its duty to warn.

Joan is joining a group of similar lawsuits, claiming that the plaintiffs suffered injuries in direct result of the metal hip implant models manufactured by DePuy. Many of them had to undergo hip replacement revision and suffered similar problems as Joan, such as pain and device failure.

Joan is suing DePuy Orthopedics for their role in the manufacturing, selling, distributing, and marketing of an allegedly dangerous product. The charges include: negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

The Metal Hip Implant Lawsuit is Case No. 1:15-dp-20277-DAK and is part of the DePuy MDL In Re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2197, in the U.S. District Court of Northern Ohio, Western Division.
