Baby powder, a product most commonly used with infants, small children, and in sensitive areas, certainly seems like it should be completely harmless. However, consumers have recently reported a connection between baby powder products and ovarian cancer.
These recent reports of baby powder ovarian cancer are a huge concern, given the severity of the disease as well as the widespread use of baby powder products.
Cancer Prevention Research published a study in 2013 linking baby powder products such as Johnson baby powder with an increased risk of baby powder ovarian cancer.
The baby powder cancer concern has arisen from one of the two kinds of baby powder formulations. One type is made with a cornstarch base, and is not involved in these allegations.
The other formulation is based on talc, sometimes called talcum powder. Talc-based products, including some baby powder products, have been linked with a heightened cancer risk due to its silica base.
Another silica-based mineral, asbestos, is also associated with an increased cancer risk, which has given the public even more reason for concern.
Baby Powder Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is a particularly dangerous form of cancer. Ovarian cancer and similar or related cancers are the fifth leading cause of cancer fatalities in United States women, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Because there are few early symptoms of ovarian cancer, this disease is usually not discovered until it has reached the last stages of the cancer. This delay makes baby powder ovarian cancer even more dangerous.
In the later stages, there is not much left to be done. This delay in discovery causes the fatality rate of ovarian cancer to soar, given that treatment is so much less effective in later stages.
Indeed, the most common type of ovarian cancer is epithelial ovarian cancer, and its early symptoms are largely unnoticeable, which makes it an even greater risk.
Baby Powder Cancer Lawsuits
Allegations of this link between talc-based baby powders and cancer, namely ovarian cancer, have been cause for serious concern among women who have used Johnson baby powder and other products of this kind.
Plaintiffs claim that, had they been adequately warned about the dangers of these potentially serious risks, this knowledge would have prevented them from using Johnson baby powder, and therefore would have allowed them to avoid ovarian cancer diagnosis altogether.
