Report: Buffalo Has Highest Rate of Asbestos Related Deaths

Asbestos danger sign warning on buildingRecent studies show that Buffalo, New York has the highest mortality rates in the United States allegedly linked to asbestos exposure.

A recent inquiry made by the Environmental Working Group Action Fund (EWG), found that the asbestos deaths exceeded the state’s death rate of 4.4% in three counties: Niagra (14.5%), Cattaraugus (11.6%), and Erie (8.1%).

Researchers did not find these results surprising, as these areas have experienced significant manufacturing and industrial development.

In one of the locations pointed out in the study, Bethlehem Steel of Lackawanna, had used asbestos fibers during their manufacturing processes. The company reportedly still uses asbestos though on a smaller scale, due to it being a cheap material that is highly resistant against fire and chemical damage.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a fibrous material that is 700 times smaller than a human hair, which has been popularly used as an insulation material since the late 1800s.

Due to how inexpensive the material was as well as having superior resistance against fire and chemical hazards, it was used popularly during World War II. For many Navy vessels, the insulation tubes pipes are composed of asbestos fibers that were tended to daily by workers. Other occupations that led to daily asbestos exposure included the automobile industry and numerous manufacturing companies.

Asbestos Exposure Dangers

While it is now heavily regulated in a number of developed countries, including the United States, asbestos is classified as a carcinogen and is considered highly dangerous. If disturbed, asbestos fibers are released into the air, which are then inhaled or swallowed by unsuspecting victims.

If the asbestos fibers are not released into the air, then the risk of exposure is relatively low.

These fibers then scar and become embedded into the individual’s organs, which then fester after a certain amount of time. For asbestos lung cancer, the inhaled fibers attach themselves onto lung tissue and eventually evolve into tumor formation.

Additionally, families were also at risk for second-hand asbestos exposure because the fibers would attach to clothing.

Asbestos exposure often leads to deadly physical conditions, such as asbestos lung cancer and asbestos mesothelioma, with a short survival rate. Asbestos lung cancer kills approximately 4,800 patients per year, and account for 4% of all lung cancer fatalities.

Despite the severity of this condition, asbestos lung cancer is often diagnosed at a latent stage of prognosis. This is because the asbestos fibers can take up to 50yrs to evolve into cancer cells, and do not exhibit any significant symptoms until it is often too late. On average, the survival period for asbestos lung cancer is between 16 to 22 months and can be possibly prolonged with chemotherapy or radiation.
