‘Skin Tight’ Premiere Highlights Excess Skin After Weight Loss

excess skinThe recent premiere of “Skin Tight” featured two people who underwent massive weight loss, revealing that being stuck with excess skin after weight loss is a common side effect.

For these individuals, and others who go through extreme weight loss, the skin that was once stretched tight over the body’s fat becomes flabby and folded once the fat is lost. The excessive extra skin that these individuals are left with is quite common for extreme weight loss patients, and generally does not go away on its own.

The show plans on featuring the two people going through surgery to remove excess skin after weight loss. For many patients, they are left with literally pounds of excess skin. As a result, many choose to go through excess skin removal surgery.

The premiere of Skin Tight featured patients Lauana and Tim. Lauana is 31 and lost 170 through bypass surgery and exercise. However, she was left with large amounts of excess skin after weight loss that left her feeling miserable and insecure.

The other patient featured on the premiere episode is Tim, age 35, who lost 220 pounds. Tim lost half his weight over time, in five years, but he was still left with excess skin.

In the episode, Lauana went through surgery to remove her excess skin and ended up removing a full 20 pounds of skin. Her second surgery, months later, removed another 14 pounds. Tim’s first surgery removed 15 pounds of skin, and his second removed 17 pounds.

Both Lauana and Tim, after months of weight loss and surgery to remove their excess skin, report rediscovering their confidence and happiness with themselves and their bodies.

Excess Skin After Weight Loss

Loose skin like this is caused by huge weight loss in a short amount of time, usually through weight loss surgery. Usually, when weight is lost through diet and exercise, the body has enough time to allow the skin to shrink down as the fat goes away.

Exercise does help in removing excess skin, but not enough to eliminate it entirely – even after years of work.

According to a study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, patients who underwent weight loss surgery and subsequently had skin removal surgery were less likely to gain weight back than those who had the weight loss surgery but did not remove the excess skin.

About 100,000  skin removal procedures following weight loss surgery are done in the U.S. per year.

Kaiser Permanente Health Insurance Lawsuits

A class action lawsuit filed in 2012 against Kaiser Permanente Health Insurance alleges that the insurance company has denied coverage for  skin removal following bariatric surgery that should have been considered medically necessary.

The Kaiser insurance lawsuit alleged that the company classified these skin removal surgeries as cosmetic surgery procedures, when in fact they may have been medically necessary given the emotional and physical importance of the procedures.

Body contouring such as removing excess skin after major weight loss can not only improve the look of a patient’s body, as in cosmetic surgery, but also save patients from a great deal of physical and emotional suffering.

However, post- bariatric surgery skin removal is often costly and even painful. Even though many patients are denied insurance coverage for skin removal procedures, some have taken steps to fight for Kaiser Permanente Health Insurance coverage, filing a bad faith insurance class action lawsuit against the Kaiser insurance company.

If you or someone you know has been denied insurance coverage over excess skin removal surgery by Kaiser Permanente Health Insurance and believe the company has breached its contract, you may have a legal claim.
