A grieving widow is suing a number of manufacturing companies, for allegedly causing the death of her husband, who died from the asbestos cancer mesothelioma, which is directly caused by inhaling the toxic fibers.
South Carolina plaintiff Joan A. is suing A.W. Chesterton Company, Bayer Cropscience Inc., General Electric Company, and a number of other manufacturing companies, for her husband’s daily asbestos exposure.
Each of these companies engaged in some form of mining, manufacturing, processing, importing, and retailing asbestos products in South Carolina. Therefore each of the companies may have contributed to the death of Joan’s husband, Robert A.
He worked as a radioman while serving with the United States Navy. During his time in the Navy, asbestos exposure was a daily occurrence as he worked with materials directly manufactured from the toxic substance.
Asbestos is a fibrous material that is 700x smaller than a human hair, which was popularly used for various manufacturing purposes during World War II. Due to its fire and chemical resistant qualities, asbestos is an ideal material for insulation and construction purposes.
Unfortunately it was not until the 1980s that officials became aware of its deadly side effects, which include asbestos related cancers, such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Overview of Asbestos Lung Cancer Damages
At all times relevant, the manufacturing companies allegedly knew that their products contained asbestos but failed to notify Robert of the dangers.
The companies also failed to tell Robert and other individuals exposed to their asbestos products, to take safety precautions or occasional checkups to spot any signs of early lung damage. Early intervention of asbestos related cancers is vital, as they take years to develop and often leave little treatment options when diagnosed.
Mesothelioma and other asbestos cancers, often take up to 50yrs after exposure for the victims to develop any symptoms. Even if radiation and chemotherapy are viable options for the victim, their life expectancy is severely shortened.
This was the case of Robert, as he ultimately died from his asbestos cancer and was widely unaware that his occupational materials could have been the cause. It is important to note that mesothelioma and asbestos lung cancer, are both deadly cancers specifically caused by asbestos exposure.
The damage occurs when the fibers are either swallowed or inhaled by the individuals, which later embed themselves in the stomach or lungs respectfully. When the fibers become stuck in the lungs, these asbestos related cancers fester and slowly effect the individual’s lung cavity.
The manufacturing companies allegedly knew these health risks, but did nothing to protect Joan’s husband. For failing to provide adequate safety warnings and protective equipment to Robert, which could have prevented his death.
