With Litigation Pending, Former WEN Girl Alyssa Milano Cuts Hair

WEN haircutAs new WEN hair products lawsuits roll in, former celebrity spokesperson Alyssa Milano has drawn interest with a sudden and super-short haircut.

Milano debuted the new pixie-length style in a December 2015 Instagram post. In a follow-up post, she credited her friends and her glam squad for the new look, but made no mention of the WEN line of products she used to endorse, or whether she had suffered any of the negative side effects reported by many other women across the country.

WEN Class Action Lawsuits

Milano’s new do comes at the same time her former hair care compatriot Chaz Dean faces legal claims over alleged hair loss and damage that some customers say they suffered after using Dean’s WEN hair products. Some of these claims also implicate Guthy-Renker, the direct marketing agency behind the many late-night informercials that promoted WEN products.

Among the claims pending against Dean and Guthy-Renker is a WEN class action lawsuit filed in a California federal court on behalf of over 200 women from 40 different states. Plaintiffs in that action allege they suffered serious damage to their hair and scalp, such as bald spots, rashes and infections, after using WEN hair products.

One plaintiff from Florida says that within two weeks of beginning to use WEN Cleansing Conditioner in Sweet Almond Mint, she began losing “substantial and abnormal amounts of hair.”

Some other plaintiffs are the parents of children whose hair was lost or damaged after using WEN. Photos showing women with visible hair loss and bald spots were filed with the WEN class action lawsuit.

Proceedings in this action were recently put on hold so that both sides could attempt to work out an agreement via mediation. The parties have told the court they have agreed on a framework for mediating the plaintiffs’ claims as quickly as possible.

In addition to legal actions, WEN hair products have been the subject of a wave of complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau and posted in online forums. The BBB says it processed more than 750 complaints about WEN hair products in the last three years, 270 of which were done in the last year. Online, consumers have left negative reviews on retail websites like Amazon, the WEN Facebook page, and consumer interest websites.

Despite agreeing to begin mediation, the company continues to stand behind its WEN hair products. In a statement, the company says there is no scientific evidence linking WEN products to hair loss. The company continues to deny allegations to the contrary.

To date, Milano has made no mention of any connection between her new haircut and any damage or loss to her hair, or even if she continues to use WEN hair products.

However, plaintiffs in the WEN hair product lawsuit may take an interest in her and other spokespersons’ relationships with Dean and his company. Plaintiffs have expressed interest in knowing how much Milano and other celebrity spokespersons were paid to endorse WEN products and whether they were aware of consumer complaints about the products.
