Woman Sues MetLife Over Disability Benefit Denial

disability insurance denialA West Virginia woman a disability insurance lawsuit against MetLife, claiming that the insurance company unjustly cut off the long term disability benefits she had been receiving.

Plaintiff Mary C. works for her own company, MDStreski LLC, where she is the sole employee. Though she may be the group’s only member, MDStreski LLC offers an employee welfare benefit plan.

According to the MetLife lawsuit, the plan provides long term disability benefits to employees who are eligible under its terms. MetLife insured those long term disability benefits of MDStreski LLC, according to the plaintiff and CEO of the company.

According to the company’s plan, Mary is an eligible beneficiary. Mary applied for long term disability benefits and also submitted sufficient evidence to support her disability claim, says the lawsuit.

MetLife initially approved the Mary’s long term disability benefits claim. However, this success didn’t last for long. A short while later, the company arbitrarily and capriciously cut off those benefits, according to the bad faith insurance lawsuit.

The Mary appealed the defendant’s initial claim denial in late 2014. According to the Mary’s lawsuit, MetLife’s decision was wrong under the terms of her plan. The appeal was denied, and so the plaintiff decided to pursue her next course of action: a bad faith insurance lawsuit against the MetLife company.

Through her bad faith insurance lawsuit, Mary hopes to recover the benefits she was previously denied.

Bad Faith Insurance

MetLife’s claim denial was not based on any legitimate reason, according to the disability insurance lawsuit. Therefore, its actions did not meet their obligation as an insurance provider to act in the best interests of the Mary.

MetLife, as well as other insurance providers such as Unum Life Insurance Company, have recently faced a growing number of bad faith insurance lawsuits from plaintiffs across the country.

These lawsuits allege that MetLife and Unum have caused hundreds of thousands of people with legitimate disability insurance claims to be denied insurance for no legitimate reason. Instead, the claim denials are filed in order to boost the companies’ profits, the lawsuits say.

Unum bad faith insurance lawsuits claim that Unum’s claim-denial is not only biased, but also purposeful and malicious. Indeed, both employees and former employees of Unum and its subsidiaries have reported being told to deny insurance claims simply to fulfill a company quota.

Many disappointed consumers with legitimate disability insurance claims are filing Unum bad faith insurance lawsuits against Unum life insurance and other companies, hoping to eventually reverse their denial of benefits.

More and more people that have been denied disability insurance are coming forward with their personal stories in these claim denial cases. Some injured parties have decided to file Unum lawsuits for bad faith insurance, gaining thousands or in some cases even millions of dollars in settlement money.
