Zithromax Linked to Serious Kidney Complications

kidney-failure-diabetesZithromax, a popular and widely-used antibiotic, has been linked with a number of severe kidney and liver side effects, which has prompted a rise in Zithromax lawsuits.

Zithromax Background

Zithromax (azithromycin), also marketed as Z-Pak and Zmax, is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved Zithromax for distribution in 1991 for the treatment of bacterial infections.

Zithromax was approved to treat both adults and children. Adults use Zithromax to treat respiratory infections or even sexually transmitted diseases, while children can be prescribed Zithromax to treat ear infections or pneumonia.

After its release onto the market, Zithromax quickly became one of the most widely prescribed antibiotic drugs available. U.S. sales peaked at $2 billion in 2005.

However, reports have linked Zithromax ingestion with serious side effects, including liver and kidney complications.

Pfizer reportedly received reports associating Zithromax with liver damage as early as 1996. Many of these reports indicated severe complications. In some cases, they were reported to be fatal.

Eventually, the FDA ordered Pfizer to warn the public about these Zithromax side effects. The company responded by updating the Zithromax warning label in 2001 to include information on its potential to cause liver damage.

The label now includes warnings of abnormal liver function, jaundice, necrosis, hepatic failure, and death.

Zithromax Liver Damage

Zithromax liver damage is an extremely serious complication, and is reportedly irreversible.

When unnoticed or left untreated for an extended period of time, Zithromax side effects can cause enough liver damage that the liver actually fails. In these cases, a patient must undergo a liver transplant.

As any patient waiting for organ donations knows, organ transplants are difficult to come by. Donations do not always come through in time for the patients that need them. Even if a patient does receive a donation, the transplant itself comes with serious risks.

Syptoms of Zithromax liver damage may include:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Severe fatigue
  • Dark urine
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels

Zithromax Kidney Damage

Zithromax kidney complications have also been reported as a less common, but still dangerous side effect of the medication.

Various Zithromax patients claim that the antibiotic has caused kidney infections, kidney damage, and even kidney failure. Zithromax kidney failure symptoms include:

  • Metallic taste in the mouth/ammonia breath
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Changes in urination
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, face, and/or hands
  • fatigue
  • Skin rash/itching
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling cold
  • Leg pain

Zithromax Lawsuits

Plaintiffs who file Zithromax lawsuits against Pfizer claim that the pharmaceutical company and other manufacturers have a legal responsibility to inform both the medical community and consumers of the potential risks associated with their products. These plaintiffs allege that Pfizer did not adequately disclose Zithromax risks, minimizing and omitting the severe and dangerous Zithromax side effects.
