The blood thinner Pradaxa has been the subject of an increasing number of lawsuits over allegedly severe Pradaxa bleeding side effects.
Pradaxa (also known as dabigatran) is an extremely popular blood-thinning drug. It was manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and approved by the FDA in 2010. The company has faced thousands of Pradaxa bleeding side effects lawsuits in the last year alone, and more are on their way.
Pradaxa was created as a new and improved version of warfarin, the traditional treatment for atrial fibrillation. Blood thinners like Pradaxa and warfarin, as well as others, are intended to prevent clotting and reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation, which is a serious condition that can (and often does) lead to strokes. Patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation are five times more likely to suffer from a stroke than those who do not have the condition.
Because Pradaxa has become so popular, Pradaxa bleeding side effects are a serious concern for millions of people. After its initial approval by the FDA, Pradaxa sales quickly skyrocketed. Millions of U.S. patients immediately switched to Pradaxa after it arrived on the market.
Many of these patients were attracted to Pradaxa because the company claims it does not require frequent blood testing or monitoring, unlike generic warfarin. These patients tend to want the convenience of a drug that does not require such consistent testing, but the alarming number of lawsuits over Pradaxa bleeding side effects suggest that this positive aspect of the drug may not be worth it.

Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects

- Uncontrollable bleeding

Uncontrollable or excessive bleeding is the most common of these side effects. Excessive bleeding can, in some cases, lead to brain hemorrhaging or even death.
Usually, when a person is suffering from internal bleeding, their body attempts to combat the effects by forming blood clots to slow the bleeding and allow for medical treatment. However, blood thinners such as Pradaxa can prevent these essential blood clots from forming, making it less likely for medical treatment to arrive in time.
Pradaxa and warfarin are both blood thinners, and so can both have these excessive bleeding side effects. However, warfarin has a major advantage that Pradaxa does not: the bleeding side effects of warfarin can be counteracted.
Warfarin has an antidote that a patient can be given to allow the blood to return to normal and clot, aiding in emergency medical treatment. There are currently no available measures like the warfarin antidote to treat Pradaxa bleeding side effects. Therefore, such bleeding complications are much more dangerous and extreme for Pradaxa users.
These serious Pradaxa bleeding side effects have caused many Pradaxa users to file lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals.
