Asbestos Exposure: Mesothelioma and Other Side Effects

human body under X-rays isolated on white with highlighted lung cancerWhen most people think of asbestos exposure, they think of decades-old buildings that are worn down and in need of repair.

While old buildings are certainly the most common source of asbestos exposure, you may be surprised to find out that asbestos can also be found in many common items around the house, including children’s toys.

The side effects from asbestos exposure are not immediate and often take 20 to 30 years to develop. When decades have passed, most individuals may not make the causal link between their health issues and their previous exposure to asbestos.

Most individuals believe the use of asbestos has been banned, however, this is a common misconception. In 1989 the EPA (Environmental Protections Agency) issued a rule to ban its use, however, the rule was overturned in 1991.

Side Effects of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally and it is found in hill and mountain areas. While asbestos mines are no longer in operation, living in close proximity to a mine may still cause asbestos exposure.

Exposure to asbestos can have devastating side defects and development of serious and even fatal disease. Most commonly, several types of cancer and lung disease develop as a result of such exposures.

  • Asbestosis: When asbestos is inhaled, it can cause severe inflammation and formation of scar tissue in the lungs. The body is unable to expel asbestos fibers, so they continue to irritate the lungs, causing further development of scar tissue. As scar tissue builds, it affects the lungs’ ability to contact and expanding, leading to breathing difficulties and oxygen deprivation.
  • Asbestos Pleural Disease: Similar to asbestosis, asbestos pleural disease affects the lining around the lungs rather than the lung tissue. It can also affect breathing capacity when the lining around the lungs develops scar tissue in the pleura.
  • Lung Cancer: Lung cancer is often confused with asbestos mesothelioma, but the two are distinct diseases. Exposure to asbestos can affect both the lung tissue and the pleura, and cancer can develop in both locations.
  • Mesothelioma: In addition to affecting the pleural lining around the lungs, cancer can also appear in the lining around other organs of the body. The lining around other organs is called the mesothelium, and the heart, abdomen, and testicles are common sites for this type of cancer to develop.
  • Other cancers: Other parts of the body may also be affected by cancer once exposed to asbestos. Larynx cancer and kidney cancer are also linked with asbestos exposure.
  • Heart Failure: Because asbestos affects the lungs so much, that organ experiences stress and can in turn affect the function of the heart as well. With diminished lung capacity, the heart is forced to work harder to pump oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. When the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the demands of the body, that causes heart failure.
