A recent CBS news report calls into question the safety of testosterone therapy products after interviewing a man who suffered a heart attack allegedly caused by a testosterone treatment product.
Plaintiff Robert K. spoke with a Chicago-based CBS News Reporter about the alleged dangers that the testosterone gel product Axiron pose and claims that consumers who use Axiron are at a significant risk for blood clots or cardiovascular impairments.
Robert’s problems started when he informed his doctor he was feeling tired and rundown, and asked his doctor what could be causing his symptoms. His doctor subsequently diagnosed him with low testosterone and suggested Robert begin testosterone replacement therapy.
However, after using the testosterone treatment Axiron, made by Eli Lilly & Co., for three months, Robert began feeling pain in his arm and chest. He was later diagnosed with a heart attack. He learned that recent research had revealed that men who used testosterone products were at an increased risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, and even death.
Robert filed an Axiron testosterone product lawsuit against Eli Lilly and Company for allegedly failing to adequately inform consumers and the medical community about the increased risk of heart attacks associated with using Axiron and other testosterone gel products.
His case joins dozens of other testosterone gel lawsuits accusing manufacturers of downplaying the risks of testosterone side effects
What is Axiron?
Axiron is a hydroalcoholic gel that is applied to the underarms and enters the body through transdermal absorption which can increase serum levels of testosterone.
Axiron is a testosterone replacement therapy used to treat men with very low levels of testosterone due to a serious medical condition, such as hypogonadism, chemotherapy, missing or damaged testicles, and more.
Does Axiron Increase The Risk Of Heart Attack?
Studies are currently underway to determine just how dangerous testosterone therapy is. One concern is that the wrong men are getting the hormones.
Testosterone treatments like Axiron are designed for men with hypogonadism, a condition in which the testes do not produce enough testosterone due to injury or disease.
Testosterone levels naturally drop off as a man ages, but age-related hypogonadism is not grounds for treatment, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now warns.
Testosterone Therapy Lawsuits
Regardless, testosterone manufacturers have spent millions promoting the hormone for off-label uses, even using direct-to-consumer advertising asking men if they have so-called “Low T,” a made-up condition with symptoms such as low sex drive, weight gain, mood swings, and fatigue. As a result, sales of brand-name low-t products such as Axiron, AndroGel and Testim have skyrocketed.
Lawsuits against testosterone manufacturers claim that these companies have profited millions by their illegal marketing of the hormone supplements without regard to testosterone side effects, some of which can be deadly.
Now men like Robert who claim they have been injured by testosterone products are holding testosterone product manufacturers accountable for their alleged deceptive and misleading practices.
