A growing number of men who have suffered from sexual side effects associated with the popular hair loss treatment Propecia have taken legal action against Propecia’s manufacturer.

Plaintiffs filing Propecia lawsuits claim that Merck & Co. was not transparent with their knowledge of Propecia’s side effects.

Many Propecia lawsuits allege that the company not only knew of the long lasting and even permanent nature of Propecia’s sexual side effects, but actively omitted that information from the product’s label.

Propecia Hair Loss Drug

Propecia has been an extremely popular hair loss treatment since its introduction to the U.S. market in 1997. Male pattern baldness is a condition that huge portions of men suffer from, so the number of potential clientele is high. During its first year of availability alone, more than 400,000 individual men in the United States filled Propecia prescriptions.

The active ingredient in Propecia is finasteride, which works by blocking the hormone that causes male pattern baldness. However, recent studies show that finasteride has been linked with potentially permanent sexual side effects.

Propecia Sexual Dysfunction

Some of the recent Propecia lawsuits allege that the sexual side effects they suffered as a result of taking Propecia are either extremely long-lasting or even permanent.

Consumers have linked Propecia with several sexual side effects. The most common Propecia side effects include:

Erectile dysfunction
Ejaculation disorder
Decreased libido

One report showed that somewhere between six and eight percent of Propecia patients experienced erectile dysfunction.

According to Merck & Co. as well as the FDA, Propecia’s sexual side effects should cease when a user stops taking the drug. Recent studies, as well as Propecia lawsuits, suggest otherwise.

While Merck & Co. insists that Propecia’s side effects are not permanent, the pre-approval trials that this claim is based on were later found to be unreliable.
