Lawsuits: Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects Are Life-Threatening

a blood bag for infusion into a clinic. donor blood is administered. The popular blood-thinning drug Pradaxa has, in recent months, been targeted in a number of lawsuits, alleging that the drug causes severe or life-threatening bleeding side effects.

Pradaxa (dabigatran) was first introduced into the drug market in 2010 as a blood thinner.

Pradaxa’s manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, has faced several of Pradaxa bleeding side effects lawsuits in just the last year.

The traditional blood thinner and treatment for atrial fibrillation is warfarin. Pradaxa was originally created to act as a new and improved version of warfarin.

Blood thinners, including Pradaxa and warfarin, thin the blood and prevent clotting, thereby reducing a person’s risk of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a serious and dangerous condition that can often lead to strokes. In fact, patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation are up to five times more likely to suffer from a stroke than those without the condition.

After its 2010 approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pradaxa sales skyrocketed. Millions of U.S. patients have switched to Pradaxa.

However, because of its popularity, Pradaxa and its side effects have become a serious and legitimate concern for millions across the country.

Pradaxa Blood Testing

One of the major reasons that Pradaxa became so popular so quickly is that it does not require frequent blood testing or monitoring. Blood testing is to be expected with most blood thinning drugs, including warfarin.

Many patients who switched to Pradaxa wanted the convenience of a drug that does not require going in for constant testing, despite the dramatic price jump from warfarin.

However, the alarming number of lawsuits filed over Pradaxa bleeding side effects in recent years suggest that the lack of blood testing for Pradaxa may not be worth it.

Pradaxa lawsuits, now in the thousands, allege that the drug’s manufacturer failed to adequately warn both the public and the medical community about their drug’s life-threatening bleeding side effects.

Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects

Blood thinners like Pradaxa, also known as anticoagulants, often cause excessive or unusual bruising or bleeding. This is an expected side effect, and is due to the body being unable to properly form blood clots while the blood is thinner.

Most people who take Pradaxa do not suffer from severe bleeding side effects, but to others, the drug can have serious and lasting side effects.

Some of these Pradaxa side effects include, but are not limited to:

  • Heart attacks
  • Liver failure
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Death

Uncontrollable or excessive bleeding is the most common of these side effects. Excessive bleeding can, in some cases, lead to brain hemorrhaging or even death.

Usually, when a person is suffering from internal bleeding, their body attempts to combat the effects by forming blood clots to slow the bleeding and allow for medical treatment. Blood thinners such as Pradaxa, however, can prevent these essential blood clots from forming, making it less likely for medical treatment to arrive in time.

Pradaxa and warfarin are both blood thinners, and so can both have these excessive bleeding side effects. However, warfarin has a major advantage that Pradaxa does not: the bleeding side effects of warfarin can be counteracted.

Warfarin has an antidote (Vitamin K) that a patient can be given to allow the blood to return to normal and clot, aiding in emergency medical treatment. There are currently no available measures like the warfarin antidote to treat Pradaxa bleeding. Therefore, such bleeding complications are much more dangerous and extreme for Pradaxa users.

Pradaxa Lawsuits

These serious Pradaxa bleeding side effects have caused many Pradaxa users to file lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals.

If you or someone you know has taken Pradaxa and has subsequently experienced any of the above symptoms, such as excessive bleeding or brain hemorrhaging, due to Pradaxa, you may have cause for filing a Pradaxa bleeding side effects lawsuit.

In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
