Onglyza Heart Failure: Daughter Sues AstraZeneca After Mom’s Death

Onglyza-heart-failuresA Chicago woman is suing AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, the maker of the type-2 diabetes medication Onglyza, alleging that the blood sugar lowering drug led to her mother’s untimely death.

Plaintiff Rochelle G., daughter of Lillie Rae G., filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging that her mother’s heart failure resulted from her use of Onglyza.

Lillie Rae began using Onglyza in 2010 and was diagnosed with heart failure in June 2011. She was hospitalized twice in 2013 due to her heart failure and died that same year, according to the Onglyza lawsuit.

Rochelle has accused AstraZeneca of negligence and failure to provide adequate warning to patients about the increased risk of heart problems associated with Onglyza. She is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus interest, as well as legal costs, attorney fees and punitive damages.

Onglyza and Heart Failure

Onglyza (saxagliptin) is a drug in the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors used in the treatment of diabetes. It works to lower blood sugar by altering the amount of insulin that the pancreas secretes.

When many people hear the term “heart failure,” they think that the heart ceases to work, or stops. Medically, heart failure refers to a situation where the body’s demands for blood is not met by the heart. In other words, the heart can’t keep up by effectively pumping the proper amount of blood.

There are several kinds of heart failure that can occur. Systolic and diastolic heart failure both occur when you have left-sided heart failure, and these are linked to the rhythm of the heartbeat. Right-sided heart failure affects the amount of blood pumped to the lungs. High-output heart failure is when the heart cannot meet the body’s excessive need for blood.

Congestive heart failure is probably the mostly widely known term, and often it is used interchangeably with heart failure. However, congestive heart failure specifically refers to the condition where fluids builds up, or congests, the arms, legs, feet, ankles and body organs. The kidneys are overtaxed with heart failure and cause the body to retain these fluids rather than excrete them normally.

Safety Concerns and Onglyza

A large research study, referred to as the SAVOR study, looked at cardiovascular events experienced by some 16,000 participants. The study found that patients who were taking Onglyza were more likely to be hospitalized due to heart failure when compared to others who were not taking the drug.

The FDA reviewed this information and decided against removing the drug from the market or placing restrictions on its use but instead called for updating the product’s label to include information about the increased risk of heart failure.

Just last month, AstraZeneca was denied approval for a proposed diabetes drug that would combine Onglyza with another diabetes drug, Farxiga (dapagliflozin).
