Onglyza Linked to Pancreatic Cancer

onglyzaThe diabetes medication Onglyza has been linked with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis, according to some doctors.

The FDA has responded to these reports, warning drug manufacturers to update their warning labels to reflect this new information.

Onglyza (saxagliptin) was created as a diabetes treatment by manufacturers AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Onglyza was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009.

This diabetes drug was designed to treat type-2 diabetes. Onglyza is part of the incretin mimetics class of diabetes drugs. This class of drugs mimics the body’s natural incretin hormones. This stimulates the release of insulin after a meal, helping to control a diabetes patient’s blood sugar level.

Though many other diabetes treatments encourage weight gain, Onglyza does not. This factor makes Onglyza a more attractive alternative to many diabetes patients for whom this common side effect can be a major concern.

Since its introduction to the market, Onglyza sales have steadily increased. In 2012 alone, Onglyza brought in a hefty $709 million. In the next few years, sales are projected to hit $2 billion annually.

Onglyza Pancreatic Cancer

According to recent reports, however, some doctors are concerned with a potential link between Onglyza and pancreatic cancer, as well as pancreatitis and thyroid cancer. Though these other side effects are also serious, Onglyza pancreatic cancer is considered the most dangerous of these potential side effects.

Onglyza pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect, and is often not diagnosed until it has already progressed until the later stages of the disease, when it is more dangerous. In these later stages, it becomes much more difficult to treat Onglyza pancreatic cancer, and the risk of fatality becomes much higher.

Onglyza Lawsuits

Hundreds of patients who have taken Onglyza, or a similar incretin-based drug, have begun filing lawsuits against the drug’s manufacturers for failing to adequately warn about the risk involved in using these drugs.

Onglyza lawsuits allege that the drug’s manufacturers either knew or should have known about the increased risk of pancreatic cancer and other side effects associated with Onglyza.

The FDA has already warned AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb that its warning label needs to be updated with Onglyza side effects, citing an increased risk of heart failure associated with the drug.

Although many agencies, including the FDA and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) believe that there is not enough evidence to prove a definitive link between Onglyza and pancreatic cancer, such a firm link is not necessary for adding label warnings.

FDA policy is that drugs do not require such definitive links before adding warnings to their labels of potential risks. Companies add warning labels when there is enough evidence to suggest a connection and cause concern. Onglyza lawsuits allege that the drug’s manufacturers should have included a warning for pancreatic cancer.

If you or someone you know has suffered from heart failure, pancreatitis, cancer, or other serious side effects after using Onglyza, you may be able to take legal action.
