Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects May Be Fatal

pradaxa-bleeding-emergency2The blood thinner Pradaxa has been linked to potentially life-threatening bleeding side effects.

Many people who have suffered from these Pradaxa bleeding side effects have chosen to file Pradaxa lawsuits, alleging that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn about the potentially fatal side effects.

Pradaxa (dabigatran) was introduced by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals in 2010 and problems with side effects were immediate. The company is facing thousands of Pradaxa lawsuits.

Pradaxa was created to be a replacement for the traditional blood thinner, warfarin. Warfarin and Pradaxa both are used to prevent the risk of blood clots by thinning the blood. Blood clots can lead to atrial fibrillation, which can then lead to strokes.

Patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation are five times more likely to suffer from a stroke than those who do not have the condition.

Because of these dangers, blood thinners are generally thought of as a life-saving treatment. But the sheer number of Pradaxa lawsuits shows the risks many say comes with taking Pradaxa.

One of the selling points of Pradaxa was the lack of blood testing, something required to be done regularly for warfarin users. In addition, warfarin has dietary restrictions that Pradaxa does not, making the drug a more attractive option.

Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects

Blood thinners like Pradaxa can cause excessive or unusual bruising or bleeding. This is an expected side effect, and is due to the body being unable to properly form blood clots while the blood is thinner.

Most people who take Pradaxa do not suffer from severe bleeding side effects, but to others, the drug can have serious and lasting side effects.

Uncontrollable or excessive bleeding is the most common of the serious Pradaxa side effects. Excessive bleeding can, in some cases, lead to brain hemorrhaging or death.

Usually, when a person is suffering from internal bleeding, their body attempts to combat the effects by forming blood clots to slow the bleeding. However, blood thinners such as Pradaxa can prevent these essential blood clots from forming.

A major difference between Pradaxa and warfarin is warfarin has an antidote that a patient can be given to allow the blood to return to normal and clot, aiding in emergency medical treatment. Pradaxa users have not had the benefit of such a reversal agent. Therefore, such bleeding complications have been much more dangerous for Pradaxa users.

Pradaxa Lawsuits

These serious Pradaxa bleeding side effects have caused many Pradaxa users to file lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals.

Pradaxa lawsuits, now in the thousands, allege that the drug’s manufacturer failed to adequately warn about the drug’s life-threatening bleeding side effects.

If you or someone you know has taken Pradaxa and has subsequently experienced any of the above symptoms, such as excessive bleeding or brain hemorrhaging, due to Pradaxa, you may have cause for filing a Pradaxa bleeding side effects lawsuit.

In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
