Can Dilantin Cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome?

Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuitA popular anticonvulsant medication, called Dilantin, has been connected with Stevens Johnson Syndrome — a severe (and potentially fatal) condition.

Dilantin, which in its generic form is called phenytoin, is manufactured and sold by Pfizer Inc.

Dilantin is the most commonly prescribed anti-epileptic drug for adults. Since its release onto the market, Dilantin quickly became one of the most widely-distributed drugs of its kind.

This anticonvulsant works to combat epilepsy and is also prescribed for other conditions by providing mood-stabilization. For this reason, it is often prescribed for bipolar disorder treatment as well.

Though the drug claims to be helpful and even life-changing for thousands of people suffering from these conditions, a growing number of complaints and lawsuits has been linked to Dilantin Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

Dilantin Stevens Johnson Syndrome

Dilantin (phenytoin) as well as several other similar anticonvulsants has been reported in connection with a serious and life-threatening condition called Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

While Dilantin’s packaging does warn about the potential risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome, and has warned of it since at least 2011, some claim that the risks should have been warned about earlier and more thoroughly.

Dilantin Stevens Johnson Syndrome (Dilantin SJS) is essentially an extreme allergic reaction. This causes the top layer of skin to develop painful and severe blisters. If a person has Dilantin SJS, the blistering and peeling of the skin tends to occur just a few weeks after first using Dilantin.

SJS rashes and blisters often lead to pain, eye problems, secondary skin infection known as cellulitis, and even damage to internal organs.

For most Dilantin Stevens Johnson Syndrome patients, their bodies are permanently and significantly scarred or disfigured.

Because the symptoms of Dilantin SJS are similar to symptoms of burns, SJS patients are often treated in the hospital burn unit.

It is important that people recognize Stevens Johnson Syndrome symptoms and seek medical treatment as soon as possible, because SJS is a life-threatening condition.

SJS symptoms include:

  • facial swelling
  • tongue swelling
  • hives
  • skin pain
  • a red or purple skin rash, spreading within hours to days
  • blisters on skin, mouth, nose, and/or eyes
  • shedding of skin

There is a more severe form of Stevens Johnson Syndrome, called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). While patients with SJS are covered with severe, blistering rashes on 30 percent or less of their skin, patients diagnosed with TEN have these painful blisters on more than 30 percent of their body.

TEN has a higher mortality rate than SJS – approximately 40 percent of TEN diagnoses result in fatalities. Both SJS and TEN should be treated immediately.

While not all cases of Dilantin SJS and Dilantin TEN are fatal, they do have lasting harmful effects. These conditions can lead to major eye problems, internal organ damage, and permanent skin damage.

Some surviving SJS and TEN patients require major skin grafting to properly heal. Cases of SJS and TEN can result in recovery periods from days to months.

Dilantin Stevens Johnson Syndrome Lawsuits

Countless injured patients and their families are currently filing Dilantin SJS lawsuits, alleging that Pfizer Inc., Dilantin’s manufacturer, failed to adequately warn consumers and the medical community of the dangerous and potentially fatal risks of taking Dilantin.

These plaintiffs claim to have developed either Stevens Johnson Syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SJS’s more severe and life-threatening form) as a direct result of ingesting Dilantin without the proper warning.

If you or someone you know has suffered from SJS or TEN as a result of using Dilantin, you may have reason to file a Dilantin SJS lawsuit to receive financial damages for your medical, financial, and emotional suffering.
