Disability insurance for dentists is a necessity, as dentists may find themselves disabled from their occupation before their careers are over.
After filing a disability insurance claim, a Michigan dentist was granted benefits that were later revoked.
The dentist, Jacquelyn C., filed her disability insurance lawsuit against The Paul Revere Life Insurance Company, underwriter for Unum life insurance, for inappropriately denying her legitimate disability insurance claim and breaching their contract.
Disability insurance for dentists is often very important, given that their jobs involve complex and unusual movements that can lead to conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger fingers. Jacquelyn has, like many dentists, developed both of these conditions due to the repetitive hand movements required as a dentist, the claim denial lawsuit explains.
Not only does this disability cause her pain and inhibit regular, everyday movements, but also inhibits her from performing her occupation with its specialized and minute hand movements.
Jacquelyn’s battle over her Paul Revere disability insurance has been a long one.
Since the development of these conditions, the dentist has pursued hand therapy treatment, which has helped to ease the pain.
However, the disability continued to worsen. In August 2012, Jacquelyn’s disability forced her to work only part-time. In January 2013, she was forced to cease her work entirely.
Shortly afterwards, in June 2013, Jacquelyn filed a disability claim form regarding her disability, attempting to claim her disability insurance benefits.
Jacquelyn was in regular contact with a representative of the company for the one and a half years it took to review her claim. In January 2014, she was issued a check representing one month of benefits, or $5,900. Under her policy, Jacquelyn would receive these benefits until the age of 65.
Shortly afterwards, her claim for partial disability was approved from August 2012 through January 2013, and her total disability claim was approved from January 2013 to the present.
However, in August 2014, Jacquelyn’s benefits were terminated because the company had determined the care she was receiving for her disability was not appropriate. Jacquelyn responded by asking for a reevaluation. This was subsequently denied, ten days later.
According to this disability insurance lawsuit, the plaintiff’s Paul Revere disability insurance was unfairly denied, leaving only the option of litigation.
By filing this claim denial lawsuit, the plaintiff hopes to regain the Paul Revere disability insurance benefits she was unfairly denied.
