Kombiglyze XR is used to help control type-2 diabetes, but this diabetes drug may actually be linked to heart failure and other serious side effects.
Kombiglyze XR (saxagliptin and metformin hydrochloride) and Onglyza (saxagliptin) are diabetes drugs that used to control high blood sugar, along with diet and exercise. These drugs belong to a class known as incretin mimetics, stimulating insulin production to regulate blood sugar levels.
This is a relatively new class of diabetes drugs, but experts are already trying to determine the potential heart failure risks and other dangerous side effects that may be associated with diabetes medications like these.
There have been major diabetes drug recalls in the past. Avandia was a popular diabetes medication, but was recalled after being linked with a risk of cardiac death. Kombiglyze XR and Onglyza may possibly be following in Avandia’s footsteps. Onglyza was recently hit with a heart failure lawsuit.
Kombiglyze XR and Heart Failure
A study funded by saxagliptin manufacturers, known to the medical community as the SAVOR study, evaluated 16,492 type-2 diabetes patients. The study found that patients who took saxagliptin were hospitalized due to heart failure at a slightly higher rate than those who did not use saxagliptin, and used other type-2 diabetes drugs instead.
Heart failure is a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition in which the heart becomes so weak that it cannot adequately pump blood throughout the body. High blood pressure or coronary artery disease can eventually lead to heart failure by gradually weakening the heart.
Even if a patient survives heart failure, they are typically forced to make significant changes to their daily life. These kinds of permanent changes may include improving their diet, reducing their level of salt intake, exercising, losing weight, and/or managing stress more effectively. All of these things can reduce the risk of further complications.
The SAVOR study did find that patients who took saxagliptin were hospitalized at a higher rate, but this increase was not considered to be statistically significant. Nevertheless, some experts believe that this potential link between saxagliptin and heart failure deserves further investigation.
Kombiglyze Lawsuits
Many people allege that taking saxagliptin directly led to major Kombiglyze side effects, including Kombiglyze heart failure. An increasing number of patients report that the drug’s manufactures failed to adequately warn and inform the medical community and consumers of potential heightened risk factors of their drug.
Studies have found other potentially serious and even life-threatening Kombiglyze side effects besides heart failure. Kombiglyze has also been connected to increased pancreatic and thyroid cancer risks.
If you or someone you know has suffered from heart failure after using Kombiglyze or from Onglyza, you may be able to file diabetes medication heart failure lawsuit.
