Heightened Ovarian Cancer Risk Linked to Baby Powder

Beautiful female hands with the talcum powder isolated on whiteSeveral companies, including Johnson & Johnson, sell baby powder products that have been linked with a heightened ovarian cancer risk.

Baby powder certainly seems like a harmless product. It is most commonly used on infants and small children.

Baby powder is a fairly standard product to keep in the home. It’s a product used in sensitive areas to absorb moisture and prevent chafing, and it is used for both adults and children. When the product is used on children, it can reportedly help prevent diaper rash.

Recent reports and studies, however, have alerted the public to a potential danger linked with some popular baby powder products.

Cancer Prevention Research published a study in 2013 linking baby powder products such as Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder with an increased risk of ovarian cancer.

Reports of baby powder ovarian cancer is a huge concern, given the severity of the disease as well as the widespread use of baby powder products.

There are several different baby powder formulations. The ovarian cancer concern lies with only one of the baby powder formulations. Other formulations have a cornstarch base, arrowroot starch base or other base and is not involved in these allegations.

The baby powder formulation of concern is based on talc, which is sometimes called talcum powder. Talc-based products such as some baby powder products have been associated with risks due to its silica base. Asbestos, another silica-based mineral, is also associated with an increased risk of cancer known as mesothelioma.

Baby Powder Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is a particularly dangerous form of cancer. Ovarian cancer and similar or related cancers are the fifth leading cause of cancer fatalities among women in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Because there are few early symptoms of ovarian cancer, this disease is usually not discovered until much later, in the last stages of the cancer, which consumers claim makes this baby powder side effect even more dangerous.

Once a patient has progressed into the later stages of cancer, there is not much that can be done to stop the disease, and it becomes much more dangerous. This delay in discovery causes the fatality rate of ovarian cancer to soar, given that treatment is so much less effective in later stages.

Indeed, the most common type of ovarian cancer is epithelial ovarian cancer, and its early symptoms are largely unnoticeable, which makes it an even greater risk.

Baby Powder Cancer Lawsuits

Allegations of this link between talc-based baby powders and cancer, namely ovarian cancer, have been cause for serious concern among women who have used this kind of product.

Plaintiffs claim that, had they been adequately warned about the dangers of these potentially serious risks, it would have prevented them from using the product, and therefore would have allowed them to avoid the ovarian cancer diagnosis altogether.

If you or someone you know has used Johnson’s Baby Powder, or a similar talc-based powder product, and have since been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, you may be able to file a baby powder cancer lawsuit.
