How Does Asbestos Cause Lung Cancer?

lung cancer, mesotheliomaAsbestos lung cancer is a rare but extremely deadly form of cancer.

Asbestos was a popular material used in numerous products throughout the United States until it was banned by the EPA in 1989. However, the government allows asbestos to remain in products that were in existence prior to 1989.

Asbestos in its natural form is a group of minerals that develop as a bundle of fibers. The fibers can be separated and woven into extremely durable threads. The fibers do not conduct electricity and are resistant to heat, chemicals, and fire. Because of the asbestos fibers’ durable qualities, it was used in countless products spanning numerous industries.

Unfortunately, many workers and consumers who have been exposed to asbestos products have developed lung cancer from asbestos. According to Asbestos.com, asbestos lung cancer is the most common cause of lung cancer death in the United States. The Mesothelioma Center estimates that approximately 4,800 deaths occur each year that are linked to this rare but serious disease.

According the Mesothelioma Center, researchers first suspected patients were suffering from lung cancer caused by asbestos in 1935. Seven years later, the National Cancer Institute confirmed the cause of the disease and the toxic asbestos fibers.

Many of the deaths caused by lung cancer from asbestos are linked to smoking. Inhaling fibers from smoking paired with inhaling fibers from asbestos appears to be a deadly combination.

Many cases of lung cancer from asbestos occur when persons are working near products that contain asbestos and the asbestos containing products are disturbed and release asbestos fibers into the air.

These tiny fibers are easily inhaled and become lodged in the lungs. Over time, as the fibers accumulate they begin to cause inflammation in the tissues. This inflammation can result in tissue scarring and inflammation. Some medical researchers believe the inflammation creates an environment ripe for cancer cells to flourish.

Asbestos researchers report that the duration of exposure and the concentration of asbestos fibers found in the body have a correlation with the rate and risk of developing lung cancer caused by asbestos. The Mesothelioma Center suggests that each year of asbestos exposure increases the risk of developing asbestos lung cancer by four percent.

Lung cancer caused by asbestos is often diagnosed in its later stages. Lung cancer from asbestos can take decades to develop symptoms but once the symptoms develop the cancer begins to quickly spread throughout the organs of the body.

Asbestos Lung Cancer Lawsuits

Product liability attorneys are currently seeking potential plaintiffs to possibly bring asbestos lung cancer lawsuits against companies that exposed victims to toxic asbestos fibers. Similar lawsuits have alleged that various companies violated consumer protection laws and put countless lives at risk.

Billions of dollars in settlements and awards have been paid to asbestos lung cancer victims. A New York jury recently awarded two men 25 million dollars after they developed cancer from asbestos.

Awards and settlements provide victims with compensation for their pain and suffering and the medical bills they have incurred due to their lung cancer. Deciding to bring an asbestos lung cancer lawsuit is a big decision that should be made with careful consideration of each persons individual facts and circumstances.
