Japanese pharmaceutical giant Daiichi Sankyo is facing serious allegations in a recent Benicar lawsuit who alleges that the a woman suffered a variety of Benicar side effects which may have resulted in permanent intestinal damage and kidney failure.
Mississippi plaintiff Loisteen W. filed the Benicar lawsuits against Daiichi Sankyo and their American partner Forest Laboratories, for failing to warn her of these Benicar side effects.
Like millions of Americans, Loisteen had been suffering from high blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to a variety of serious health conditions, with heart disease being one of the most prevelent. Benicar is one of the most popular drugs prescribed for this purpose, with 67 million potential patients in America.
Loisteen was prescribed Benicar in 2007, using the drug according to prescription instruction and following the advice of her physician. However, Loisteen suffered from adverse Benicar side effects which effected her gastrointestinal health so severely that she suffered from kidney failure as a result.
Loisteen insists that she never would have taken Benicar, had she known the risks.
For being allegedly responsible for manufacturing, selling, distributing, and marketing Benicar, Loisteen is suing Daiichi Sankyo and Forest Laboratories. The charges include negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.
Overview of Benicar Side Effects
According to many Benicar lawsuits, Benicar side effects can cause sprue-like enteropathy, kidney failure, intestinal damage, chronic diarrhea, and other serious gastrointestinal symptoms.
Along with leading to health problems like malnutrition and dehydration, these symptoms can potentially cause permanent damage in the patient’s intestines.
Patients could also suffer from the inability to absorb nutrients from food, often contending with chronic malnutrition problems. Due to the severity of the Benicar side effects, many patients need intense medical care to recover.
FDA Warns About Benicar Side Effects
For years Benicar patients had been misdiagnosed with Celiac disease, due to the similar symptoms. This miscorrelation was proven false in July 2013 when the FDA released a public warning regarding Benicar side effects and also required Daiichi and Forest to include chronic diarrhea symptoms on the drug’s label.
The federal agency released this warning following a review submitted by the Mayo Clinic in 2012, which found that Benicar patients suffering from chronic diarrhea symptoms had tested negative for Celiac disease.
After Benicar was concluded to be the commonality, the FDA was notified. The agency found a clear association between Benicar and sprue-like enteropathy,and stated that physicians should have their patients discontinue the drug if suffering from these side effects.
The FDA went on to say that these Benicar side effects could be life-threatening, citing one patient from the Mayo Clinic study who had lost 125 lbs. as a result.
Daiichi Sankyo has been repeatedly criticized for failing to warn patients of these Benicar side effects, which the company allegedly knew about for years.
The Benicar Lawsuit joins more than 1,000 lawsuits consolidated in multidistrict litigation known as In re: Benicar (Olmesartan) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2606, in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage.
