A Maryland woman is considering joining the pending class action litigation involving WEN by Chaz Dean products, alleging the hair products caused extreme hair loss.

Monique P., a resident of Aberdeen, shared her experience with ABC2 News, revealing that her once long, thick hair has started falling out and she is left with bald patches all over her scalp. Monique attributes her hair loss to the WEN hair products she began using almost a year ago.

Monique decided to purchase the WEN products after seeing them advertised on TV, hoping her hair would become healthier. At first, Monique said, her hair felt and looked great and even encouraged her mother and daughter to use the celebrity-endorsed hair products. Then suddenly, her hair starting falling out and her mother and daughter have also reportedly experienced hair loss and scalp irritation.

Monique recounts that she was at a loss as to what was causing her hair to fall out until she saw a news report detailing how other women who used WEN hair care products were experiencing the same problem.

Monique now has to wear hats to hide her visible bald spots and is considering her legal options and may join the class action lawsuit against WEN by Chaz Dean and its parent company, Guthy-Renker.

Problems with WEN

Official WEN products are sold through Hollywood stylist Chaz Dean’s website, Guthy-Renker, Sephora, and QVC. The products are advertised as natural products, “The cleansers include a perfect blend of special ingredients, including natural botanicals and herbs, and do not contain sodium laurel sulfate or harsh chemicals.” However, not all the formulations are the same from retailer to retailer.

Dean said he developed the WEN Hair Care line in 1993 and tested it for five years before its official debut. His goal, he said, was to remove the sulfates and other ingredients that could be harmful to people’s hair.

However, reports of problems with WEN hair care products have circulated online for years. Online reviewers have reported hair loss. One Texas women posted online: “In the shower when I squeezed the water out of my hair, I’d have handfuls of hair coming out.”

A West Virginia consumer posted: “I thought this would be a great product and it isn’t!!! My hair fell out in clumps and I have several bald spots and my part is wider. This is devastating!!!”

Another reviewer wrote: “My hair was coming out in clumps in my hands as I washed and rinsed it, I would have a palm full of hair.”

WEN Class Action Lawsuit

WEN hair care products get a lot of publicity from celebrities, including Alyssa Milano and Brooke Shields. But the late-night infomercial and home shopping network staples are now the subject of a class action lawsuit filed by 200 women who claim the shampoos and conditioners caused their hair to fall out in clumps, leaving them with bald spots, scabs and burns on their heads.

Many of these women who have joined the federal WEN hair care class action lawsuit similarly allege that after using WEN products regularly, their hair has “fallen out by the handfuls,” with some women claiming they have lost 50% of their hair after using WEN products.

Guthy-Renker denies that WEN is in any way defective or responsible for hair loss.
