Volkswagen continues to face more bad news, as recent reports indicate that sales are plummeting in the United Kingdom.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Volkswagen sales dropped 20 percent in November and 10 percent in October.
This spells trouble for the German automaker, as the United Kingdom is Volkswagen’s fourth largest market with 12,958 new vehicles registered in November.
The dismal numbers from Britain are compounded by sales figures from the U.S., where Volkswagen sales declined by 25 percent during the month of November.
Even in the company’s native Germany, Volkswagen sales declined by 2 percent in November, despite overall growth of 8.9 percent in the auto industry during the same period.
The Volkswagen emissions scandal affected other brands under the company’s umbrella, like Audi and Skoda, but the drop in car sales has been most profound on the VW brand.
Volkswagen Emission Allegations
Volkswagen is facing these lowered sales amidst an ongoing emissions testing scandal. On Sept. 18, 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sent a Notice of Violation letter to Volkswagen, stating it found that nearly 500,000 Volkswagen clean diesel vehicles sold in America emitted much higher emissions than allowed under the Clean Air Act. This included vehicles such as the Volkswagen Passat TDI Clean Diesel.
The German automaker ultimately admitted that up to 11 million of their clean diesel cars worldwide contained an emission control system called a “defeat device.” The device installed in vehicles such as the Volkswagen Passat TDI Clean Diesel allowed the cars to identify when they were in normal driving mode or in emissions test environments, allowing the cars to cheat nitrogen oxide emissions testing.
Volkswagen will need to recall almost half a million cars in America including the Volkswagen Passat TDI Clean Diesel and 8.5 million in Europe.
The Volkswagen emissions scandal has resulted in dozens of federal lawsuits and class action claims filed by consumers who claim they have been financially damaged by the company’s false advertising.
Many of these consumers claim to have bought Volkswagen-brand cars based on the brand’s reputation for being “environmentally friendly,” and insist they would not have paid a premium price if they had known the actual rates of diesel exhaust.
