WEN cleansing conditioner WEN Hair Care was hit with a class action lawsuit by hundreds of customers alleging that the product caused their hair to fall out.

Many of these customers allege that the product left bald patches and rashes on their scalps.

The WEN class action lawsuit currently involves more than 200 individuals in 40 states. Thousands more customers – most of them women – have filed complaints about the products and their side effects.

WEN Hair Care is a hair product line endorsed by many celebrities. It was created by Los Angeles hair stylist Chaz Dean. However, its products have been accused of damaging and destroying hair — hair loss and damage that persisted even after they stopped using the product.

The marketing firm associated with WEN hair products, Guthy-Renker, has received thousands of these kinds of complaints. WEN is an extremely popular product, second only to Proactive for Guthy-Renker sales.

One WEN class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The consumer class action does not list the ingredients in the WEN hair care products that allegedly caused this damage, and instead merely claims that they use “numerous harsh chemicals,” according to an NBC news report.

The WEN class action lawsuit was filed in July 2014. The plaintiff leading the class action lawsuit, Amy Friedman, alleges that she “began losing substantial and abnormal amounts of hair” just two weeks after beginning usage of WEN’s Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner. She began using this product in January 2014.

Though Friedman stopped using the Cleansing Conditioner after she began to lose her hair, she claims the unusual shedding continued for a number of weeks until between a quarter and a third of her hair was gone.

On top of the damage to consumers’ hair, the WEN class action lawsuit also alleges that Guthy-Renker was “blocking and/or erasing” negative reviews from its Facebook page.

In November, WEN issued a statement to CBS, indicating that these consumers’ hair loss was not due to WEN hair products, and that they would “vigorously contest” the lawsuit.

According to a statement from the company, “There is no scientific evidence to support any claim that our hair care products caused anyone to lose their hair.”

Despite this rebuttal, the class action lawsuit against WEN hair care products goes on, and customers continue to complain about hair loss and scalp damage.

Many consumers are saying that FDA regulations regarding hair care products may be in need of an update to prevent this kind of damage in the future.

For instance, the FDA still does not require safety testing of personal care products before they are sold. Because the FDA does not require companies to report customer injury complaints – even extremely serious ones – the federal agency is even less likely to make necessary changes.
