A Kentucky judge has signed a consent decree resolving a $15.5 million Risperdal lawsuit between the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
Initially filed in 2013, the Risperdal lawsuit alleged that the company lied to patients and the medical community about the severe gynecomastia symptoms that the drug may cause.
The Risperdal lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, claimed that the companies deliberately concealed the fact that Risperdal side effects — especially gynecomastia symptoms — are dangerous for specific groups of people. According to the lawsuit, Risperdal side effects are especially dangerous for children and the elderly.
Risperdal was initially only approved to treat adults, and the Risperdal lawsuit alleged that Janssen marketed Risperdal as being safe and effective for children prior to the FDA’s approving the drug for use in children.
The lawsuit further claimed that the pharmaceutical giant failed to inform parents and the medical community that Risperdal could cause abnormal breast growth (gynecomastia) in boys and infertility in girls. The drug is also linked with a higher risk of death for elderly patients, the lawsuit says.
Janssen is resolving these allegations with a $15.5 million payment to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. On top of this hefty sum, Janssen has also agreed to stop promoting Risperdal for uses other than those that are FDA-approved.
The company is also required to begin accurately and adequately disclosing information about known risks and side effects associated with the use of Risperdal.
Risperdal Basics
Risperdal (risperidone) is an antipsychotic medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of various mental and mood disorders. The conditions Risperdal is used to treat vary, and include schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and autism.
Risperdal is intended to help people suffering from these conditions think more clearly and take part in normal, everyday life. Atypical antipsychotics like Risperdal help restore the balance of various natural substances in the brain.
Despite its benefits, Risperdal has also been linked with a number of serious Risperdal side effects – risks which may not have been adequately communicated to the patients and the medical community.
These Risperdal side effects include diabetes and movement disorders. Risperdal has also been linked with the development of male breasts, or Risperdal gynecomastia.
Risperdal Gynecomastia Symptoms and Treatment
Hundreds of boys and young men who took Risperdal have developed male breasts as a side effect of the medication.
In some of these cases, boys had such excessive gynecomastia symptoms that the breasts became quite large, even up to “D” cups.
While gynecomastia symptoms may not be physically harmful – that is, they do not put the patients in direct danger – patients with the disorder have found the gynecomastia symptoms to be traumatic.
Gynecomastia symptoms may naturally go away over time. However, if the symptoms do not go away within one or two years, gynecomastia treatment surgery may be required in order to remove the excess breast tissue.
Gynecomastia treatment can also come in the form of hormone therapy. Gynecomastia involves hormone inbalance, so doctors may attempt to achieve hormonal balance to try to alleviate symptoms prior to going to the extreme of surgical breast removal.
Risperdal Lawsuits
