An Iowa woman is the latest in a growing number of individuals to pursue a product liability lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies Daiichi Sankyo and Forest Laboratories, alleging that side effects of Benicar caused her to suffer serve colitis, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal health problems.
Plaintiffs Lisa Kay L. and her spouse Lavern filed the Benicar lawsuit as part of the multidistrict litigation against Daiichi Sankyo pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
Lisa Kay’s Benicar lawsuit joins a number of other Benicar lawsuits pending in New Jersey, alleging that Daiichi Sankyo failed to adequately research their popular blood pressure medicine or provide adequate warnings for patients and the medical community about the link between Benicar and serious gastrointestinal problems.
Lisa Kay claims that she developed a number of painful and debilitating medical conditions associated with the side effects of Benicar, including sprue-like enteropathy, lymphocytic colitis, microscopic colitis or collagenous colitis, which have left her with severe gastrointestinal problems, chronic diarrhea, malnutrition and dehydration.
The Benicar lawsuit further alleges that Daiichi Sankyo knew or should have known about the risk of Benicar colitis problems and sprue-like enteropathy, but failed to disclose the risk until after studies were released and a subsequent FDA warning.
What is Benicar?
Benicar (olmesartan) is a blood pressure medicine. Specifically, it is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) medication manufactured by Forest Laboratories and Daiichi Sankyo, and commonly prescribed to keep blood vessels dilated in patients with high blood pressure to reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.
Angiotensin II is a protein that is found naturally in the body and acts on the cardiovascular system in a variety of ways, including controlling blood pressure. When angiotensin II is released by the body, it causes blood vessels to narrow, which increases blood pressure and makes the heart work harder to pump blood.
Benicar is designed to block angiotensin II, thereby preventing it from constricting blood vessels, and allowing blood to flow more easily through the body.
Possible Side Effects of Benicar
Benicar has been on the market in the United States since it gained FDA approval in 2002, but consumers are just now being warned that use of the popular blood pressure medicine may be linked to devastating side effects with long-term consequences. According to mounting research, Benicar users may face an increased risk of serious medical complications, including the following:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Sprue-like enteropathy
- Considerable weight loss
- Intestinal damage
- Villous atrophy
- Colitis
- Celiac disease-like symptoms
