Onglyza Complications Include Pancreatic Cancer

onglyzaThe type-2 diabetes medication Onglyza, which helps patients by increasing the cells within the pancreas to produce insulin, may increase the chance of users developing pancreatic cancer, studies suggest.

The Diabetes Medical Journal published a study that found those who use incretin mimetic drugs like Onglyza had pancreases 40 percent larger than normal. In addition, they found precancerous cell growth and tumors within the pancreas.

Also, John Hopkins researchers reported that type-2 diabetic patients hospitalized for pancreatitis were twice as likely to be taking an incretin mimetic drug like Onglyza rather than another diabetes medication.

Medical experts claim that even the presence of benign tumors within the pancreas can end up requiring surgery as they can become malignant and cause pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic surgery means patients end up with a lifelong requirement to take insulin injections to regulate blood sugar levels.

Onglyza Side Effects

Early Onglyza pancreatic cancer symptoms are generally mild. That makes the condition initially difficult to diagnose.

Some of the symptoms diabetic patients taking Onglyza should look out for include:

  • Jaundice
  • Abdominal pain
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal swelling or tenderness
  • Dark urine
  • Clay-colored stools

Other Onglyza complications include an increased risk of heart failure and thyroid cancer. In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers discovered that diabetic patients taking Onglyza increased their risk of heart failure by 27 percent compared to those taking other diabetes medications.

The FDA issued safety warnings about the risk of thyroid cancer and heart failure associated with taking Onglyza. The agency also published a safety communication which announced that it would begin investigating the possible link between Onglyza and pancreatic cancer.

As more research surfaces that shows a connection between Onglyza and life-threatening side effects, diabetes patients are considering filing Onglyza lawsuits against manufacturers  AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb for failing to adequately warn.

If you experienced one of the severe Onglyza complications you may be able to file a Onglyza lawsuit. Contact a Onglyza attorney to find out if you have legal claim.
