A Maryland jury recently ruled against Johnson & Johnson, manufacturer of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal, finding that the pharmaceutical giant failed to properly warn doctors and patients that the drug could lead to abnormal male breast development.
Plaintiff Nicholas M., a 21-year-old man, accused Johnson & Johnson of causing disfigurement and mental anguish after he developed breasts as a teenager.
The jury agreed with Nicholas’s claims, concluding that the Risperdal manufacturer failed to properly warn physicians and patients of the risks related to the drug. Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $1.75 million to resolve the claims in the lawsuit.
Nicholas was not alone in his claims against Johnson & Johnson. Around 5,400 Risperdal lawsuits are currently pending throughout the country, with many plaintiffs claiming that the drug caused abnormal male breast growth.
According to a report filed in October with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Johnson & Johnson has set up a reserve to deal with lawsuits filed over the gynecomastia side effect, though the amount of the reserve was not specified.
Risperdal Side Effects
Risperdal is a drug that was originally developed to treat schizophrenia and other disorders involving psychosis. It has also been used to treat dementia in elderly patients, as well as bipolar disorder and autism in children. Risperdal is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
According to Risperdal lawsuits, breast changes are some of the most concerning side effects of Risperdal use. Males may develop gynecomastia, or what is commonly referred to as “man boobs.”
In addition to male breast growth, Risperdal lawsuits also allege that users may experience nipple pain, nipple discharge, and painful breasts.
Not surprisingly, secondary side effects may occur when males begin having uncharacteristic breast growth. These physical changes can have a profound effect on a male’s emotional well-being. Risperdal plaintiffs have reported severe depression and even suicidal thoughts and behavior as a reaction to the physical side effects of the drug.
Risperdal Lawsuit Information
Last month, a California Jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $5.6 million in a Risperdal wrongful death lawsuit. Earlier this year, in March, a 20-year-old man was awarded $2.5 million after having taken Risperdal from age 8 to age 13 to treat his autism and subsequently developing male breasts.
Not only has Johnson & Johnson been the target of individual lawsuits in state and federal courts, the company has also been the target of the U.S. Department of Justice. In November 2013, the company was hit with a $2.2 billion dollar settlement to resolve criminal and civil fines. Johnson & Johnson continued to deny accusations of marketing Risperdal to children, older adults and adults with disabilities, and also denied giving doctors kickbacks for writing Risperdal prescriptions.
