Report: Propecia Sexual Side Effects May Be Permanent

Propecia lawsuitPropecia (finasteride), a popular hair growth treatment, has in recent reports been linked with lasting sexual side effects.

While Propecia has been associated with sexual side effects for quite some time, it is only recently that these side effects have been reported as possibly permanent.

Patients that report more lasting or permanent Propecia sexual side effects indicate that the complications cannot be stopped simply by discontinuing the treatment.

This kind of lasting sexual dysfunction may not be directly harmful, but can lead to embarrassment, depressive symptoms, and even suicidal thoughts.

Propecia Background

Propecia is a drug manufactured by Merck that was originally FDA-approved in 1998 as a male pattern baldness treatment.

Even early on, the listed Propecia side effects included decreased libido and disturbed sexual function. The majority of early Propecia research indicated that these side effects were supposed to be temporary.

Though these sexual dysfunction side effects would persist during use of Propecia, they were believed to be reversible when the drug was withdrawn.

However, new reports based on patient questionnaires may indicate that Propecia’s sexual side effects may be more permanent than originally thought. There has still not been a great deal of research into these claims, and it is unclear as of yet how common these more permanent Propecia side effects may be.

Though most of the research surrounding Propecia and its side effects show that they are typically resolved when use of the drug is stopped, the patient reports have shown the medical community that more research is still needed to determine how problematic this issue is.

FDA Responds to Propecia Side Effects Reports

Even before more research can be done, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already responded to these reports. The FDA changed Propecia’s adverse reaction label in April 2012 to read: “Reproductive System: Sexual dysfunction that continued after discontinuation of treatment.”

The possible sexual side effects now listed on Propecia labeling include erectile dysfunction, libido disorders, ejaculation disorders, and orgasm disorders.

The recent reexamination of potential Propecia sexual side effects and their potential to have a long-term or even permanent impact on a Propecia user seems to have turned up very little evidence.

Instead, these studies have come up with results similar to those that led to the original FDA approval in 1998. So far, studies continue to indicate that the drug is both safe and effective for men to use in treating male pattern baldness.

The fact that numerous patients have reported such long-lasting side effects must be taken into account, despite the lack of evidence supporting the idea. The medical community and the public should both be aware of these potentialities, so that the risks and benefits of Propecia are always extremely clear to all parties.

Propecia Lawsuits

Sexual problems such as those experienced as Propecia side effects can be emotionally damaging for patients. Persistent sexual side effects, especially dysfunction that continues after the use of the drug is over, can damage personal relationships and quality of life. Some may choose to file Propecia lawsuits in response to this new information.

Plaintiffs involved in these Propecia lawsuits allege that Merck, the manufacturer, failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about the serious and potentially permanent side effects of Propecia. Some of these plaintiffs further allege that Propecia side effects changed their lives and relationships, causing mental and emotional harm.
