Pradaxa, an extremely popular blood thinner, has been linked with a number of extreme and even life-threatening Pradaxa bleeding side effects.
Many people who have suffered from Pradaxa side effects, including those who are going through brain hemorrhage recovery, have chosen to file Pradaxa lawsuits.
In general, Pradaxa lawsuits allege that the drug manufacturer failed to adequately warn the public and medical community about the potentially fatal side effects linked with Pradaxa — including Pradaxa internal bleeding in the brain.
Background of Pradaxa Usage
Pradaxa (also known as dabigatran, in its generic form) was first brought into the drug market by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals in 2010. Pradaxa was created to be a replacement for the traditional blood thinner, Warfarin.
Pradaxa was approved as a blood thinner, but its allegedly dangerous bleeding side effects have caused the company to be targeted in thousands of Pradaxa lawsuits within the last year alone.
Blood thinners are generally thought of to be a life-saving treatment, but the recent rush of Pradaxa lawsuits suggests that the risk might be more than patients originally thought. These risks affect a great number of people, since in just a few years since its approval and introduction to the market, millions of U.S. patients have switched to Pradaxa.
What Causes Brain Bleeds?
Blood thinners like Pradaxa, also known as anticoagulants, often cause excessive or unusual bruising or bleeding. This is an expected side effect and is due to the body being unable to properly form blood clots while the blood is thinner.
Most people who take Pradaxa do not suffer from severe bleeding side effects, but to others, the drug can have serious and lasting side effects.
Some of these Pradaxa side effects include, but are not limited to, Pradaxa internal bleeding in the brain, heart attacks, liver failure, uncontrollable bleeding, and death.
Uncontrollable or excessive bleeding is the most common of these side effects.
Pradaxa internal bleeding in the brain can, in some cases, lead to brain hemorrhaging. Brain hemorrhage recovery is a difficult process, and may not be successful for all patients. These bleeding side effects can lead to fatalities.
Usually, when a person is suffering from internal bleeding, their body attempts to combat the effects by forming blood clots to slow the bleeding and allow for medical treatment.
However, blood thinners such as Pradaxa can prevent these essential blood clots from forming, making it less likely for medical treatment to arrive in time.
Warfarin also has an advantage in that the bleeding side effects of Warfarin can be counteracted. Warfarin has an antidote that a patient can be given to allow the blood to return to normal and clot, aiding in emergency medical treatment.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced its approval of Praxbind, a drug designed as an Pradaxa antidote for bleeding emergencies, including Pradaxa internal bleeding in the brain. However, the new reversal agent came too late for those who have filed a lawsuit after suffering from alleged Pradaxa complications.
Pradaxa Lawsuits
Serious Pradaxa bleeding side effects have caused many Pradaxa users, some going through brain hemorrhage recovery, to file lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals.
Pradaxa lawsuits, now in the thousands, allege that Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals failed to adequately warn both the public and the medical community about the drug’s life-threatening bleeding side effects.
If you or someone you know has taken Pradaxa and has subsequently experienced any of the above symptoms, such as excessive bleeding or brain hemorrhaging, due to Pradaxa, you may have cause for filing a Pradaxa bleeding lawsuit.
In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
