Mesothelioma news brought some interesting discoveries last year, from new research studies being published to lawmakers looking into asbestos exposure to large companies being sued for their alleged role in causing asbestos exposure through their products.
In case you missed it, here is a summary of just a few of our top mesothelioma news stories of 2015:
Asbestos Exposure Kills 12K to 15K Annually
A study published in mid-2015 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) stated that in the U.S. alone, asbestos exposure kills between 12,000 and 15,000 individuals each year.
This estimate was higher than anticipated, and researchers believe the amount is still underreported, with many more dying than what EWG’s estimate reported.
Talcum Powder May Be Linked to Mesothelioma, Study Finds
Not only is talcum powder use associated with ovarian cancer, a recent study showed that mesothelioma may also be linked to the common hygiene product. Since talc is similar to asbestos, it is believed that talc-based baby powders may also cause mesothelioma to develop.
Proposed Bill Would Impact Asbestos Exposure Victims
Public Citizen, a consumer watchdog group, reported that a proposed bill by lawmakers could severely impact individuals pursuing legal action in asbestos lawsuits.
Called the “FACT Act” (Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency), the bill was proposed as a way to filter out fraudulent claims from individuals seeking legal compensation for mesothelioma and other related diseases.
The bill proposes the setup of asbestos trusts to handle asbestos claims, and to post information such as individuals’ names, addresses, employment history, medical information and settlement amounts on websites accessible to the public. Opponents of the bill feel the legislation will make it more difficult to have victims receive timely compensation, especially since many are suffering from grave illness that threatens their life expectancy.
The House is expected to vote on an updated version of the FACT Act sometime early this year.
Oregon Explores Options to Prevent Asbestos Exposure
Environmental officials in Oregon began to look for new ways to further prevent asbestos mesothelioma and asbestos lung cancer by looking to change the way Oregon contractors do business. Current state rules only require contractors to turn in documentation if there is a planned asbestos removal.
Oregon is the only state with rules falling short of federal demolition standards, and apparently has fallen short in enforcing federal standards. Various groups are working together to have tighter regulation of asbestos exposure in buildings.
Lawmakers Want a Recall of Asbestos Crayons
Lawmakers requested a recall of crayon and crime lab toys from various retailers including Toys R Us, Amazon, Party City and Dollar Tree. The recall was issued after several products tested positive for asbestos, after the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Action Fund issued a report.
