WEN Hair Products Under Fire for Allegedly Causing Bald Spots

Close-up of a brush with lost hair on it, on white backgroundA class action lawsuit has been filed in a California federal court against WEN by Chaz Dean and its infomercial owner Guthy-Renker alleging that WEN’s conditioning cleanser is making them go bald.

Over 200 women across the United States are alleging that WEN by Chaz Dean, a popular hair care line created by the celebrity stylist, causes bald spots, scalp damage, hair loss and other adverse side effects.

What is WEN?

Chaz Dean, known for styling Hollywood celebrities, created the hair care product as an alternative way to clean hair. Many notable A-list stars are seen on the WEN website endorsing the product.

The WEN Cleansing Conditioner is said to “replace shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, detangler and leave-in conditioner,” according to WEN hair care site.  The product is further described on the website as a “single-step process that cleanses and conditions the hair simultaneously.”

The WEN Cleansing Conditioner is advertised as a natural product: “The cleansers include a perfect blend of special ingredients, including natural botanicals and herbs, and do not contain sodium laurel sulfate or harsh chemicals.”

WEN hair care claims using its products will strengthen hair and leave it healthy-looking and clean. However, some women are speaking out saying the product has left them with bald spots and thinning hair.

Consumers Report WEN Causes Visible Bald Spots

While plenty of positive reviews for the WEN products exist on the internet, other consumers allege that when it comes to items such as WEN’s Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner, the product is responsible for causing bald spots and hair damage.

One Dallas, Texas resident posted online: “In the shower when I squeezed the water out of my hair, I’d have handfuls of hair coming out.”

Kellie of West Union, West Virginia posted on Consumer Affairs: “I thought this would be a great product and it isn’t!!! My hair fell out in clumps and I have several bald spots and my part is wider. This is devastating!!!”

Another reviewer wrote: “My hair was coming out in clumps in my hands as I washed and rinsed it, I would have a palm full of hair.” Others posted photos showing frightening bald spots or clumps of hair in the sink.

WEN Class Action Lawsuit

Many of the plaintiffs in the WEN class action lawsuit say they saw the products advertised online or on TV as a type of miracle for hair, promising to make it healthier than ever. Instead, the plaintiffs claim a litany of problems, ranging from scalp irritation to bald spots.

The WEN class action lawsuit, filed in California Federal Court on March 17, 2015 on behalf of more than 200 plaintiffs, includes graphic pictures of women with significant hair loss and bald spots they claim Dean’s products caused.

In addition to the alleged bald spots and scalp injuries, court documents claim that Guthy-Renker blocked comments about hair loss from WEN’s Facebook page and removed negative online reviews about the products.

Guthy-Renker denies that WEN is in anyway defective or responsible for hair loss.

The WEN Cleansing Conditioner Class Action Lawsuit is Caryn Callozo et al. v. WEN by Chaz Dean and Guthy-Renker LLC, Case No. 2:15-cv-ODW-AGR, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
